Pontius Pilate, the governor of Jerusalem, had to release one of two prisoners: a murderer named Barabas, or an innocent man named Jesus Christ, who said he was the Son of God. The chief priests and the people insisted on releasing Barabas. Pilate, who disagreed, asked what he was to do with Jesus. -Crucify him, crucify him,- they shouted.
Soldiers led Jesus away, put a crown of thorns on his head, and mocked him, calling, -Hail, King of the Jews!- Without a word, Christ shouldered the huge wooden cross and staggered through the streets of Jerusalem. After He fell several times, a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, was forced to help carry the cross to Calvary. They were followed by a great company of people, and of women, to whom Jesus said:
-Daughters of Jereusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.-
In -The Way of the Cross,- acclaimed artist Christopher Nick vividly depicts the fear, hatred, and sorrow that surround Jesus as He struggles under the cross on the way to His death, and we contemplate His sublime sacrifice—and His everlasting love.
