A long time ago when the Earth was first formed by the Power of Maheo, there was no light. The animal people gathered in the dark for a council. Fox said the people on the far side of the world had light, but were greedy. Possum offered to go and steal a bit of their light. He hid it in his thick, bushy tail, but the light was so hot it burned all the fur away. Buzzard went next and placed the fire on his head, but the fire seared off his magnificent crest feathers.
Then Spider crept to the far side of the world and caught a tiny mote of light in a pottery cup. When she returned home, the light spilled over the world and the animals rejoiced. Spider wisely hung the light in the sky on a silken strand so its brilliance will always shine on the great and the small.
Grandmother Earth, beloved bride of Maheo, came to the Council to bless the Spider. And to this day, the Spiders dewy web is shaped like the rays of sunlight.
Artist Diana Stanley brings to life this lovely, classic myth of the North American Indians in Council of the Animals, the seventh issue in the Visions of the Sacred plate collector's series.
