Zolan's own Story about his miniature lithograph! -- Crystal is one of my favorite little subjects to paint so I decided to celebrate her birthday in a painting. I show her down at the mailbox collecting letters she's just discovering are for her. It's fun to think of all the loving messages waiting for her behind each white envelope. Everything about the picture says this is Crystal's day. She has a pink and white dress with lace, ruffles and gathers, white socks trimmed with lace, party shoes and a big pink bow. The dress is ironed, her hair is brushed, flowers are blooming, balloons are filled and the mailbox has the gift of birthday greetings just for her. When you're Crystal's age a birthday is filled with emotion — excitement, anticipation, happiness and impatience because you want everything to begin, everything to last forever and the day to never end. I painted Crystal in what is probably the one quiet moment in her birthday day. Here she is just opening her first birthday letter. Her lips are pursed and she looks just a little serious as she starts to open it. I know how much Crystal loves being outdoors and all the simple pleasures of nature so I gave her flowers and grass, trees and a broad sky, which is my way of saying, "Happy Birthday."
